Overview
Founded in 970 during the Fatimid era, Al-Azhar is one of the oldest universities in the Islamic world and a leading center of Sunni Islamic scholarship. Expanded by successive dynasties over more than a thousand years, it combines Fatimid, Mamluk, and Ottoman elements, with five minarets rising above the Cairo medina. Located directly across from Khan el-Khalili, it pairs naturally with a bazaar visit. Non-Muslims may visit outside prayer times in modest dress. Free entry. Across from Khan el-Khalili.
