Overview
Built between 1907 and 1911 for Belgian industrialist Baron Edouard Empain by architect Alexandre Marcel, this 'Hindu Palace' blends Beaux-Arts style with forms borrowed from Angkor Wat and the Hindu temples of Odisha, India. Empain launched Cairo's first tramway and developed the entire Heliopolis suburb. Long considered haunted - one legend claims the baron's sister died falling from the rotating tower - it was closed to the public from 1997 until a $10.9 million restoration beginning in 2017 reopened it as a heritage museum in 2020. Admission is around EGP 100 for foreigners; rooftop access and photography incur extra fees. On Salah Salem Road in Heliopolis, about 30 minutes by taxi from downtown.
Travel Tips
Bring extra cash if you want to climb to the rooftop viewpoint. Pairs well with a stroll through old Heliopolis for a half-day outing.
