Overview
In the Coptic Cairo (old Fustat) district stands Egypt's oldest synagogue, believed to have existed before the 9th century. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, the current structure dates from the 1890s. The 'Well of Moses' in the courtyard behind the building is tied to local legend as the spot where baby Moses was found in a basket among the reeds. The roughly 400,000-document trove known as the Cairo Geniza, discovered here in the late 19th century, is now held at Cambridge University as a landmark source for medieval Jewish history.
