Overview
On the east bank of the Nile, Luxor Temple is a monumental sanctuary built by Amenhotep III and expanded by Ramesses II. Colossal seated statues of Ramesses II and an obelisk (its twin now stands in Paris's Place de la Concorde) guard the entrance. An avenue of sphinxes links it to Karnak Temple, and architecture from pharaonic, Roman, Christian, and Islamic eras coexists on the same site. When floodlit at night, the temple takes on a wholly different, mystical atmosphere.

Travel Tips
The temple is most beautiful after sunset under the floodlights, so an evening visit is recommended. Pair it with Karnak on the same day and a stroll along the Nile.
