Overview
Shimoni is a small fishing village about 75km south of Mombasa, serving as the gateway to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. The village's name means 'place of the hole/cave' in Swahili, referring to the Shimoni Caves, said to have been used to hold captives during the 19th-century slave trade, offering a sobering look at the region's history. Today it's better known as a launch point for diving, deep-sea fishing, and dolphin tours.
