Overview
Completed in 1886, this is Porto's most iconic bridge, designed by Théophile Seyrig, a protégé of Gustave Eiffel. The 385m-long, 44.6m-high two-tier arched iron bridge has Metro Line D and pedestrians on the upper deck and cars and pedestrians on the lower deck. The upper deck is one of Porto's finest viewpoints, taking in the Douro, the Ribeira district, and the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia - golden sunsets over the river are the best moment. The lower deck lets you appreciate the bridge's massive ironwork up close. Free to cross. 5-minute walk from Metro D São Bento station.

Travel Tips
Sunset photos from the upper walkway are legendary. The deck vibrates when a metro passes, but it's perfectly safe.
