Overview
Across the Douro in Vila Nova de Gaia, around 50 port wine lodges have aged their wines since the 17th century. World-famous houses like Sandeman, Taylor's, Graham's, Cálem, Kopke, and Ferreira are all here, most offering cellar tours and tastings (2-3 wines, about EUR 15-25). Cellars lined with massive oak barrels remain much as British merchants built them in the 17th and 18th centuries, adding deep historical value. Guides explain port styles - Ruby, Tawny, LBV, Vintage, White - and the production process, and some lodges offer rooftop terraces overlooking the Douro and Porto's old town. 5-minute walk from Metro Jardim do Morro (Line D).
Opening Hours
10:00-19:00 (varies by cellar)
Travel Tips
Multi-cellar tasting packages (about EUR 50-80) offer good value. Enjoy a riverside walk after the tastings.
