São Bento Railway Station

Centro Histórico, Porto

Overview

Completed in 1916, Porto's central train station is world-famous for the roughly 20,000 azulejo tiles adorning its hall. Painter Jorge Colaço spent 11 years creating the tile murals depicting Portuguese historical scenes — from the Conquest of Ceuta to King João I's entry into Porto — in striking blue and white. A working railway station that doubles as a work of art, it is often the starting point for exploring Porto. Free to visit. Directly at Metro D São Bento station.

Opening Hours

05:00-01:00 (station operating hours; tile viewing is unrestricted)

Travel Tips

Free to visit, making it a great first stop after arriving in Porto. Avoid rush hours; mid-morning or late afternoon offer the most relaxed viewing.
