Overview
Tarangire National Park is a 2,850 sq km reserve near Lake Manyara, about 2 hours by car from Arusha. It's nicknamed the 'land of baobabs' for its iconic stands of giant baobab trees, and during the dry season (June-October) elephants from the surrounding region converge along the Tarangire River, making it one of the highest-density elephant areas in East Africa - herds of several hundred can be spotted at once. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, impala, and a rich birdlife round out a safari experience quite different from the Serengeti. Admission $59/day. About 2 hours by car from Arusha.
Opening Hours
Daily 06:00-18:00
Travel Tips
The dry season (June-October) is best for elephant viewing. Adding a night here to a Ngorongoro/Serengeti circuit is the most efficient way to include it.
