Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad

Umatac, Guam

Overview

Built around 1810 to guard Umatac Bay, the galleon trade's port of call, this is the best preserved of Guam's Spanish forts. Behind its remaining cannon, the red roofs of Umatac village, the crescent bay and the jungled southern ridges stack into the island's definitive postcard. A marker notes Magellan's 1521 landing in this very bay — you're overlooking the Pacific's first meeting with Europe. It makes the natural turnaround point of the southern loop.
