Latte Stone Park

Hagåtña, Guam

Overview

Latte stones — limestone pillars and capstones that held up ancient Chamorro houses — are the island's defining symbol, echoed in logos and architecture everywhere. Here, eight of them, 800-1,000 years old and relocated from Me'pu in the south, stand beneath the palms as the easiest encounter with pre-Spanish Chamorro civilization. In the cliff behind, Japanese wartime air-raid tunnels add another layer of the island's stacked history. Three minutes on foot from Plaza de España.
