Overview
Rising 1,670m in northern Costa Rica, Arenal is an active volcano whose flawless cone silhouette is one of the country's most iconic images. After a major eruption in 1968 it stayed intermittently active until 2010 and is now in a dormant phase. The surrounding rainforest is rife with hiking, zip-lining, and rafting, and the geothermally heated natural hot springs are the perfect way to unwind afterwards.
Opening Hours
National park: daily 08:00-16:00.
Travel Tips
Early morning or sunset offers the best chance of a cloud-free view of the cone. Even in the rainy season (May-November), mornings tend to be clearer - plan activities accordingly.
