Overview
About 45 minutes northwest of La Fortuna, Venado Caves are limestone formations created roughly 15 million years ago on the ocean floor. The 2.7km cave system holds stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and coral and shell fossils proving its marine origins. Wearing helmets and rubber boots, visitors walk through underground rivers and squeeze through narrow passages with a guide. Cave-dwelling bats, spiders, and crickets add to the atmosphere.
Opening Hours
Daily 08:00-15:00 (guided tours only).
Travel Tips
You'll get wet — bring a change of clothes. Some narrow sections may challenge those with claustrophobia. A waterproof camera case is a must.
