Overview
Completed in 1818 in Neoclassical style, the GPO still functions as a working post office today. It served as headquarters of the Provisional Government during the 1916 Easter Rising, and it was here that Patrick Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic outside the building. Bullet marks from British artillery still scar the facade. The GPO Witness History exhibition inside vividly recounts the Rising. Post office free; exhibition about EUR 16. In the heart of O'Connell Street.
Travel Tips
Look for the bullet scars on the facade. Combine with The Spire monument nearby, standing where Nelson's Pillar once stood.
