Overview
At the geometric center of Angkor Thom, the Bayon is a late-12th-century Buddhist temple commissioned by Jayavarman VII. Its 54 towers carry a total of 216 colossal stone faces — interpreted variously as the king himself or as the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara — that gaze in all four directions, creating a sense of being watched from every angle. The first-level bas-reliefs vividly depict naval battles with the Cham and daily life in the Khmer empire, giving it major historical importance. Accessible with the Angkor Pass. In central Angkor Thom.
