Overview
Weligama, meaning 'sandy village,' is a south-coast town whose wide, gentle bay offers ideal beginner waves, making it a hub of Sri Lankan surfing. Traditional stilt fishermen can also be spotted along the shore, and the private residence on Taprobane Island in the middle of the bay is well known. Surf schools and beach cafes line the coast, making it easy for beginners to learn to surf. About 25 minutes by car from Galle.
