Overview
Place Seffarine is a small triangular square shaded by fig trees right beside Karaouine University, ringed for centuries by workshops of artisans hammering copper and brass into pots, trays, and lamps. The rhythmic clang of hammer on metal echoes across the square, and finished pieces gleam in front of every shop. On one side stands the library annex of Karaouine University, one of the world's oldest institutions of higher learning, letting visitors feel how scholarship and craftsmanship have coexisted here for centuries. Free entry. Between Karaouine University and Al-Attarine Madrasa.
Travel Tips
Visit in the morning to see artisans actually at work. Sit at a cafe terrace on the square and take in the rhythm of the hammers.
