Overview
Volubilis has been inhabited since the 3rd century BCE and flourished as a Roman provincial city from around 40 CE, making it one of the best-preserved Roman sites in North Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. A triumphal arch, Capitoline temple, and basilica survive among the ruins, and the remarkably vivid mosaic floors depicting scenes of Orpheus and hunting are a particular marvel, their colors still vibrant. About 1 hour 30 minutes from Fez, it is often paired with nearby Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the birthplace of the Idrisid dynasty, for a full-day tour. Admission MAD 70. About 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Fez.
