Royal Palace of Fez (Dar al-Makhzen)

Fes Jdid, Fes

Overview

Dar al-Makhzen, the Royal Palace, was first built in the 14th century under the Marinid dynasty and expanded by successive rulers; it remains in use today for royal ceremonies. The public cannot enter, but the plaza in front, lined with seven massive gilded brass doors (Bab Dakakin) crafted by artisans in the 1960s-70s, is one of Fez's most photogenic spots. The doors, combining intricate zellige tile with carved brass ornamentation, are considered a modern masterpiece continuing Marinid architectural tradition. The open plaza in front offers plenty of room to frame the full gate in a photo. Free to view from outside. Near the Mellah district.
