Overview
Akumal means 'place of turtles' in Maya, and true to its name, this mystical Caribbean bay lets you snorkel with wild sea turtles (mostly green sea turtles). The shallow, calm bay is safe for beginners, and besides turtles you may spot stingrays, colorful reef fish, and occasionally small sharks. To protect the ecosystem, entry now requires a licensed guide and sunscreen is restricted. Visit early morning for the best turtle photos. Admission about $20 (guide included). About 30 minutes by car from Playa del Carmen.
