Overview
Muyil is one of the longest continuously inhabited Maya sites on the eastern Yucatan coast, believed to have been in use from pre-Christian times through the Spanish conquest. Its main structure, the 17m 'El Castillo' temple, draws far fewer visitors than Tulum, allowing for a relaxed visit. Right beside the ruins, canoe and boat tours depart along ancient Maya canals into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, making it a hidden gem combining archaeology with nature. Admission MXN 80. About 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Playa del Carmen, south of Tulum.
