Overview

Cozumel is Mexico's largest Caribbean island, a 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. It gained fame when Jacques Cousteau named it one of the world's top dive sites. The Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park is home to over 500 species of tropical fish and coral, and visibility exceeding 30m makes for exceptional snorkeling and diving. The town of San Miguel de Cozumel offers traditional Mexican shops and seafood restaurants, and the wild beaches on the island's east coast are also charming. Round-trip ferry about MXN 400-500. Winjet or Ultramar ferries depart from Playa del Carmen port, taking about 45 minutes.

Beginners can try Discover Scuba Diving, and snorkeling alone offers plenty of reef access. A rental car or scooter is the easiest way to circle the island.
