Overview
The Boca Paila Peninsula, a narrow sand spit running from south of Tulum into the UNESCO Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, has the Caribbean Sea on one side and mangrove lagoons on the other. It's considered a mecca for fly-fishing (bonefish, tarpon, permit), while boat tours explore ancient Maya canals through the mangroves, spotting dolphins and turtles along the way. Sparsely populated and largely undeveloped, it offers an experience of the Caribbean coast in its most pristine state. Boat tours about $60-90. About 1 hour 20 minutes by car from Playa del Carmen, via Tulum.

The road includes rough unpaved sections, so a guided tour is preferable to self-driving. Bring insect repellent and biodegradable sunscreen.
