Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá

Zipaquirá, Cundinamarca

Overview

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a Catholic church built 200m underground in a salt mine, about 50km north of Bogotá. Born from the miners' tradition of praying before shifts, the first cathedral was built in 1954 and the current one in 1995. Fourteen Stations of the Cross chapels are carved into salt walls and lit with color-changing LEDs, and a monumental salt cross and Virgin Mary figure are breathtaking. One of Colombia's most-visited attractions, it's called 'Colombia's First Wonder.'

Opening Hours

Daily 09:00-17:30.
