Plaza de Bolívar has served as Bogotá's civic core since the city's founding in 1538. Originally called Plaza de la Constitución, it took its current name in 1846 when a statue of Simón Bolívar was erected at its center. The square is framed by the National Capitol (seat of Congress) to the south, the Liévano Palace (city hall) to the west, the Palace of Justice to the north, and the Primatial Cathedral to the east - a single vantage point onto Colombia's political, religious, and historical life. The open-air plaza is free to visit at any time and sits a five-minute walk from the Museo del Oro TransMilenio station.
