Wenceslas Square

Nové Město, Prague

Overview

Laid out by Charles IV in 1348 as part of the New Town, this 750m boulevard was originally called the "Horse Market." It has witnessed major moments in modern Czech history: the 1918 declaration of Czechoslovak independence, Jan Palach's 1969 self-immolation protest, and the 1989 Velvet Revolution. At its head stand the equestrian statue of St. Wenceslas and the National Museum, while today the square buzzes with shops and restaurants. At night, the illuminated facades give it a completely different atmosphere. Free and open. Directly connected to Metro Můstek (Lines A, B) and Metro Muzeum (Lines A, C).
