Overview
Completed in 1950, Rovaniemi Church was built during the postwar reconstruction period after German forces burned the city to the ground in a scorched-earth retreat during WWII. Designed by architect Woldemar Baeckman, it features a large altar mural, 'Oh Land of Freedom,' by Finnish painter Lea Santala, capturing both the scars of war and the hope of rebuilding. Its simple yet dignified wooden interior and bell tower stand as a symbol of Rovaniemi's postwar recovery for locals.
