Overview
Built of some 2.5 million red bricks in American neo-Baroque style, this served as Hokkaido's seat of government for 80 years from 1888. A major restoration completed in summer 2025 added new pioneer-history galleries and a café. The pond-front garden is picture-perfect in cherry season and under snow — the red brick against white is a Sapporo winter classic. Eight minutes on foot from Sapporo Station, it makes a natural start to a downtown walking route.
