Overview
Completed in 1923 at the height of Otaru's port era, the canal keeps its stone warehouses — now restaurants and beer halls — intact. At dusk, 63 gas lamps flicker on and nostalgia settles over the water; 40-minute cruises (JPY 1,800 day / 2,000 night) view the warehouses from below. The walk to Sakaimachi Street strings together Kitaichi Glass, the Music Box Museum and LeTAO's flagship. During February's Snow Light Path festival, candlelit glass floats drift on the canal — the jewel of a winter trip.
