Overview
Opened in 1866 by the monk Miizumi Jozan, this 150-year-old spa town lines the Toyohira gorge with some 20 hotels and ryokan. Its sodium-chloride waters hold heat famously long; day bathing runs JPY 800-2,000, with free foot and hand baths dotted around. Peak season is early-to-mid October, when maples flood the gorge red — best seen from the Futami suspension bridge. One direct bus (60-75 minutes) from downtown makes it one of Japan's most accessible onsen retreats.

Town always open (day-bath facilities usually 10:00-20:00)
🚇 Getting there
