Overview
Heart of Sharjah is a major heritage project restoring the city's historic core, transforming pre-1950s traditional Arab buildings into museums, galleries, cafes, and traditional souks. Walk narrow alleyways to admire barasti (palm-leaf) roofed houses, coral-stone walls, and wind towers (barjeel), and shop for crafts and incense at Souk Al Arsah — the UAE's oldest souk. It offers an authentic Arab heritage experience in stark contrast to Dubai's modern glitz. Free entry (individual museums have fees). About 5 minutes on foot from the Museum of Islamic Civilization.
Opening Hours
Sat-Thu 08:00-20:00 (souk and café hours may vary).
Travel Tips
Souk Al Arsah is a great place to buy traditional Arabian incense and handicrafts as souvenirs. An early morning visit lets you photograph the area in peace.
