Overview
El Peñón de Guatapé is a 220m granite monolith about 2 hours east of Medellín. The 740 steps zigzagging up its face lead to a top-deck view of Guatapé village's colorful rooftops, an emerald reservoir, and dozens of tiny islands - one of Colombia's most Instagram-famous panoramas. The town's bright zócalo wall reliefs are an easy bonus stop.
Travel Tips
Doable as a day trip from Medellín - leave in the morning. The stairs are steep, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Boat tours in Guatapé are also available.
