Overview
This site began as the Santiago Apóstol parish church, founded by Franciscan friars around 1575, and was repeatedly damaged and rebuilt over the centuries. Construction of a new Romanesque-style church, designed by German architect Francisco Kurtze, began in 1870, but work stopped permanently after the devastating "Santa Mónica" earthquake of May 4, 1910, leaving the building in ruins. Declared a national cultural heritage site in 1982, the ruins now enclose a garden and walking paths that serve as a beloved public space. Located right on Cartago's central plaza, admission is free.
