Orosi Valley

Orosi, Cartago

Overview

Orosi is a valley town on the Reventazón River, about 12 km south of Cartago. Its church, San José de Orosi, was built between 1743 and 1766 and remains the oldest colonial-era church still in use in Costa Rica. The former monastery beside it has been converted into a small museum displaying confessionals, altars, and religious artifacts. Coffee farms blanket the surrounding hillsides, and the Orosi viewpoint (Mirador) on the approach into town offers panoramic views of the valley and, on clear days, Irazú Volcano. With hot springs and river trekking nearby, it's a popular day trip from Cartago.

Opening Hours

The town is open year-round; the church can be visited outside Mass times (subject to change, please verify before visiting).
