Overview
The Jade Museum (Museo del Jade), opened in a striking new building in 2014, showcases the world's largest collection of pre-Columbian jade. More than 7,000 jade pieces, along with gold and ceramics, illuminate the sophisticated culture of Costa Rica's indigenous peoples. The five-story building, designed to resemble a giant jade box, walks visitors chronologically from prehistory through the Spanish conquest. Bird- and animal-shaped jade pendants stand out for their exquisite craftsmanship.
