Overview
Poás Volcano, about 45km northwest of San José, stands at 2,708m with one of the world's largest active craters (1.3km across). An emerald-green sulfuric lake sits inside the crater, and volcanic gases visibly rise from the surface. On clear days, both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts are visible. Cloud-forest and dwarf-forest trails around the volcano offer unique ecosystems to explore. Advance reservations required (daily visitor cap).
Opening Hours
Daily 07:00-13:00 (advance booking required; 20-minute viewing slots).
Travel Tips
Visit as early as possible for the best chance of a cloud-free crater view. Online booking is mandatory with a fixed time slot. Bring warm layers.
