Overview
The National Museum of Costa Rica occupies the former Bellavista Fortress in downtown San José, and the bullet holes still visible on its exterior walls hint at the country's turbulent past. After Costa Rica abolished its military in 1948, the fortress was symbolically transformed into a museum. Exhibits include the mysterious pre-Columbian stone spheres, goldwork, and ceramics, while the rooftop butterfly garden shelters a range of tropical species.
Opening Hours
Tuesday-Saturday 08:30-16:30, Sunday 09:00-16:30, closed Mondays.
Travel Tips
Admission is free on Tuesdays. Visit the butterfly garden in the morning when activity is highest, and enjoy the rooftop views of San José.
