Overview
Completed in 1897, the National Theatre is San José's most beautiful building, designed in a Renaissance style inspired by the Paris Opera. It captures the wealth and cultural ambitions of Costa Rica's coffee boom, with Italian marble, French furniture, and lavish ceiling murals inside. Performances are still held here, and the elegant in-house cafe is the perfect spot to admire the architecture over a cup of Costa Rican coffee. The theatre even appears on the country's 5-colón banknote.
