Overview
Built in 1957, this mausoleum honors Aga Khan III (Sultan Muhammad Shah), the 48th Imam of the Ismaili Muslims, who came to Aswan in 1954 seeking relief from arthritis. Modeled on Fatimid tomb architecture and built of pink granite, it carries on a tradition begun by his wife, Begum Om Habibeh, of placing a fresh rose on his tomb daily - still continued by the caretakers. His grandson, Aga Khan IV, was also laid to rest here in 2025. The interior has been closed to the public since 1997, but the hilltop view over the Nile and west bank desert alone justifies the visit. Entry is generally free, though a small fee may apply locally. On a west bank hill, reached by boat then a walk uphill.

The uphill walk is fairly steep - wear comfortable shoes. Visit near sunset for the most beautiful Nile views.
