Overview
The Nubian Museum (officially the International Museum of Nubia) grew out of UNESCO's international rescue campaign for Nubian heritage threatened by the Aswan High Dam. Plans were finalized in the 1980s, construction began in 1986, and the museum opened in 1997, designed by Egyptian architect Mahmoud El-Hakim in a style echoing traditional Nubian architecture - work that won the 2001 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Over 3,000 artifacts trace Nubian civilization from prehistory through pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Christian, and Islamic eras, alongside reconstructed displays of traditional Nubian houses and daily life. Admission is around EGP 100-140 for foreigners (subject to change). Across from the Basma Hotel in central Aswan.
