Overview
About 4km south of Aswan near the Nile's First Cataract, Sehel Island was a sacred pilgrimage spot in antiquity, where expeditions and traders heading into Nubia would pray for safe passage through the treacherous rapids. Its granite boulders bear hundreds of inscriptions and royal cartouches from the Middle Kingdom through the Greco-Roman period, most famously the 'Famine Stela,' said to record events from the reign of King Djoser and his vizier Imhotep. With few organized tours, it remains a place to see traditional Nubian village life up close. No separate admission fee; reached by felucca or motorboat, about 20-30 minutes from Aswan.
Travel Tips
Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the heat and get better photos. Few packaged tours exist - negotiate a felucca privately.
