Overview
One of the oldest Islamic cemeteries in the world, in use from the early Islamic conquest (around 642 CE) through the Mamluk period, the Fatimid Cemetery survives today thanks to Aswan's dry desert climate preserving its mud-brick tombs. Of roughly 80 tombs, about 30 remain, and the site is architecturally significant as an early site of the domed mausoleum form in Islamic architecture. Several mashhads (saints' shrines) survive, including the 'Dome of the Seventy-Seven Walis.' Located behind the Nubian Museum along the road to Aswan Airport; if a caretaker guides you around, a small tip is appreciated. Entry is generally free.
