Daraw Camel Market

Daraw, Aswan Governorate

Overview

About 40km south of Aswan, the small town of Daraw hosts Egypt's largest camel market. Camels arrive on foot from Sudan's Darfur and Kordofan regions along the ancient 'Forty Days Road' (Darb al-Arba'in), get trucked the final stretch near Abu Simbel, and are then traded here. Tuesday is the busiest trading day, with dealing running from before dawn until around 10am, and cattle, sheep, and goats change hands alongside the camels in a dusty, bustling scene. An adjacent regular market sells vegetables, spices, and leather goods. Free to enter. About 45 minutes to an hour by car from Aswan, usually visited on a tour.
