Overview
Now the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, this historic riverside hotel was built by Thomas Cook in 1899 and opened in 1900, known for its Moorish exterior and a dining room topped by a 23-meter dome inspired by Cairo's Mamluk mosques. Agatha Christie stayed here for about a year in 1937 while writing 'Death on the Nile,' and past guests have included Winston Churchill, Howard Carter, and Princess Diana. Non-guests can enjoy afternoon tea in the lobby lounge or take in Nile and Elephantine Island views from the terrace. There's no separate admission fee, but lounge access requires ordering food or drinks. At the southern end of the Aswan Corniche.
