Overview
Built between 1911 and 1925 as Madrid's municipal slaughterhouse and livestock market, the complex was converted and reopened in 2007 as Matadero Madrid, a sprawling arts center in the Arganzuela district along the Manzanares River. The original red-brick industrial architecture remains intact, now housing Cineteca (an indie and art-house cinema), exhibition halls, design shops, and an outdoor performance space. Most exhibitions and strolling through the grounds are free, while special exhibitions or performances may carry a separate fee (subject to change—check before visiting). It connects to the Madrid Río promenade, making it easy to combine both.
