Overview
Housed in a converted 18th-century hospital reopened as a museum in 1992, the Reina Sofía is the home of Spanish modern art. The crown jewel is Pablo Picasso's enormous antiwar 'Guernica' (1937), a 7.8m-wide black-and-white masterpiece depicting the German bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War. The museum also showcases Salvador Dalí's surrealist works, Joan Miró's abstractions, and Juan Gris's cubism - the cream of 20th-century Spanish art. The contrast with Jean Nouvel's contemporary extension is striking. Admission about EUR 12 (free Mon-Sat after 19:00 and Sun after 13:30; closed Tuesdays). 3-minute walk from Metro Atocha (Line 1).
Opening Hours
10:00-21:00 (Sundays until 14:30; closed Tuesdays)
