Overview

Founded in 1686 by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bar Convent is England's oldest surviving convent and once served as a hiding place for Catholics during a period of severe persecution. The elegant Georgian-era chapel was disguised as an ordinary house to avoid detection, and features eight hidden escape routes. The attached museum tells over 300 years of religious tolerance and persecution history. Adult admission about GBP 8. Near Micklegate Bar, 10-minute walk from the city centre.
