Overview
Originally Roman and rebuilt in the medieval era, these 3.4km walls are England's most complete surviving medieval city fortifications. Walking atop them gives elevated views of York Minster, Clifford's Tower, and the riverside. A full circuit takes about 2 hours, and you can hop on and off at four main gatehouses (bars) and several access points. Free to walk. About 5 minutes on foot from York station to the nearest wall entrance.
Opening Hours
08:00 to dusk (wall-top walkway; open year-round).
