Cathedral

York Minster

City Centre, York

Overview

Construction began in the 13th century and took about 250 years to complete, making York Minster the largest medieval Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. The 60m central tower, reached by 275 steps, offers a 360-degree view over York, and the Great East Window — the size of a tennis court — is the world's largest expanse of medieval stained glass. Below ground, excavated Roman ruins let you experience 2,000 years of York's history in one place. Admission about GBP 16 (GBP 20 including tower). About 10 minutes on foot from York station.

Opening Hours

09:00-17:00 (Sundays 12:45-17:00; limited access during services).

Travel Tips

The central tower climb (275 steps) is a must. Sunday choral services are a special chance to experience the cathedral's acoustics.
