Overview
Founded in 1088 under the patronage of William II, this Benedictine abbey was once one of the wealthiest and most powerful monasteries in northern England. Destroyed following Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, only the romantic ruins of its arched walls and columns remain today, standing within Museum Gardens. Summer evenings sometimes bring open-air theatre performances against the ruined backdrop. Free entry. 6-minute walk from York Minster.
